So, imagine you're you. That shouldn't be too hard, unless you're playing video games and reading books all the time, in which case, you may feel like someone else. But either way, imagine you're you. Your girlfriend or boyfriend has just dumped you after months of being together. You don't know what to do. You're down in the dumps, you're sad, you're not sure what your next step is, you're...
Depressed?
Depressed yes, but depressed, no. See how that's different? Of course you do. Let me explain. There's a big difference between you being sad because something happened, and having depression. When you have actual depression, there is a chemical imbalance in your head. It's a constant battle between the forces of positivity and negativity, and in almost all cases negativity wins out. Depression isn't just being sad because something happened, like somebody cutting off your left pinky toe (which would suck and I'd be sad). No, it's more than that. It's something that swells in you, that is always there. It stops you from doing the things you love the most, holds you back from being the best you can be, or doing the best you can do. It tells you that you're not good enough every single day. It presses on you harder and harder every day until you either give up, or you decide to go on another day.
Depression isn't just something that makes you sad; it's something that can destroy your life and the life of everyone around you if you let it.
There are so many forms of depression, I don't think I could count them all (but to be honest, I've never been good at math). It's an ever present feeling, though you may have glimpses of happiness or of other good things. It's hard. But it's also something we must face. Is depression beatable? Can someone overcome their genetics and find a way to defeat depression? I sure hope so. All I know is that we can't just sit by as people face this stuff. We need to understand. We need to understand that there are people who are depressed, but don't have depression, and people that are depressed and have depression.
I don't know why I'm bringing this up today. I think depression is a lot more of an important issue than we think. It hurts people, it ends lives. It really sucks. I guess what I want to say is, if you know someone who has depression, give em a pat on the back. Get involved in their lives. Make a difference somehow. Love them, because God knows they need it.
Here's to a better world.
