You ever feel like the world revolves around you? You're going along trying to make yourself happy, trying to find meaning for yourself. You eat food for yourself. You drink because you need to and maybe want to as well. You sleep for your health. You do whatever your hobby it is so you can have fun. Almost every thought you have is about you. I mean, it makes sense. You're you. Not that dude sitting in the shop over there, but you. You're you. I mean, maybe you're someone else too; I can't read your mind. You might be switching between two bodies, controlling both of them and---ah, got off track. That's besides the point.
Well you're going along in life thinking about something you need, or something you like, or something that relates to you in some way, and then you meet someone. They may not be someone different or unique; they may not be someone you fall in love with, but something they do or say flicks a switch on in your head and you realize "holy hell, life's not just about me. These people think and have lives of their own as well." What I mean is that, not only are the people around you not machines or computer programs programmed to make you happy or give you a normal life (because we've all had that thought, right?), but they're actual living people not made out of metal. That's crazy. But really, take a step back. All right, now that was probably too small of a step. Okay, that one was a little too big. Take a tiny step forward. Perfect. Now that I've instructed you on how to do a simple jig, I just want you to consider this. The day has come that you've realized that the people around you have independent thought. They live and breath the same air you do, drink the same water as you, but in the end they want something different. Or something similar. The fact remains, you finally understand that they think, just like you think. Not in the same way, but they think.
How does that change you?
You might not be able to tell from my blog posts, but I'm definitely not perfect (shocking, isn't it?) and I can see other people aren't either. I mean, I don't know how to explain it, but now that I know that people have desires as strong as mine, something inside me is different. I realize people may not be after the same thing, but if we don't work together we'll achieve nothing. Nothing.
The fact of the matter is, when you understand this, you really start to understand what life's about. This should change you. It should make you want to be different somehow. Because at this point, you realize that the scientists of our day were wrong. The world does not revolve around you. It revolves around the sun, and it moves on regardless of what you do. You are a part of this world. You're a part of a greater whole. You can live a selfish life where you do whatever you want, and only think about yourself, but I guarantee that you'll probably end up hating that life. Life has more meaning when you realize the people around you have dreams as well, and you work together to create a better world.
I believe in that world. I don't always live it (like I said, I'm far from perfect), but I'll be damned if I don't keep trying. The world needs people like you and I who understand this. It needs us to go out and be different and pay attention to the people around us. Maybe you need to listen more. Maybe you need to close your computer or turn off your phone and talk to the person in front of you. I don't know you. It's up to you to decided what you need to do.
You understand this principle now, or maybe you kind of understand it. So what are you going to do about it? How will you let this change you?
Me? I dunno. Maybe I'll go out and buy somebody a root beer. Everybody loves root beer.
